Physical and Cognitive Development in Early Childhood

In the early childhood, the growth rate of body and limbs decelerates in comparison to pre-birth rates. However, brain proliferation reaches its peak and myelination continues. Handedness becomes clear.

Preschoolers reach a significant milestone in motor development. Gross and fine motor skills become more advanced. During this period, preschoolers are susceptible to injury and illness. Precaution measures should be taken, such as immunization, personal protection and etc.

Preschoolers are not yet an “operational” thinker. It is the second Piagetian stage lasting from 2 to 7 years of age. It can be further split into two sub-stages: the symbolic function sub-stage and the intuitive sub-stage. Piaget theorized that preschoolers construct by transforming, organizing and reorganizing previous knowledge. On the contrary, Vygotsky proposed that preschoolers construct knowledge via social interaction (Harris, 2006; Mooney, 2006)

Information Processing Approach illustrates how preschoolers process information in early childhood. Preschoolers’ capability of paying attention, memory, developing strategies and solving problems are discussed. The factors how they master vocabulary, grammar, and conversational skills are further studied.

Finally, several approaches to early childhood education are examined, comparing cons and pros.
